EPR Compliant

Authorized Lead-Acid Battery (ULAB) Recycling

Secure channelization for UPS, Forklift, and Automotive Batteries. 100% recycling via registered smelters aligned with Battery Waste Rules, 2022.

The Informal Sector Violation

Selling ULAB to 'Kabadiwalas' is illegal. Under the 2022 Rules, batteries must only optionally go to Registered Recyclers to generate compliance certificates.

Technical Scope

Used Lead-Acid Batteries (ULAB)

Electrochemical energy storage devices containing lead electrodes and sulfuric acid electrolytes. End-of-life units are hazardous (Toxic Lead + Corrosive Acid) but are a "Tradeable Compliance Asset" under the new EPR regime.

Regulatory Classification

Pb-Acid

Battery Waste Rules 2022

Classified as Used Lead Acid Battery. Subject to EPR Targets.

HAZARD

Characteristics

Class 8 (Corrosive Acid) & Class 6.1 (Toxic Metals).

Industrial

Used Inverter Batteries, UPS Batteries, Forklift (Traction) Batteries.

Automotive

Car Batteries, Truck/Commercial Vehicle Batteries.

Electrolyte

Spent Sulfuric Acid requiring neutralization or reuse.

Regulatory Tripwires

Governed by Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022.

Informal Sector Risk

Selling to 'Kabadiwalas' is illegal. Batteries must only be transferred to Registered Recyclers integrated with the CPCB portal.

EPR Credit Liability

Bulk Consumers failing to channel batteries correctly cannot generate EPR Certificates, creating regulatory liability for Producers and stakeholders.

Acid Dumping Fines

Draining acid into soil/drains attracts severe Environmental Compensation (EC) levies for groundwater contamination.

ACID LEAKAGE

Sulfuric acid (pH < 2) causes chemical burns. Batteries must never be drained on-site. Hazardous!

SHORT CIRCUIT RISK

Terminals must be taped/capped. Haphazard stacking leads to sparking and hydrogen gas explosions.

STORAGE RULES

Impervious acid-resistant flooring and covered sheds required. Segregate from Li-ion batteries.

Technical FAQs

Can we auction our old batteries to the highest bidder?

Only if the bidder is a Registered Recycler under Battery Rules 2022. Auctioning to unauthorized traders is illegal and breaks the EPR compliance chain.

What is the difference between Battery Rules 2001 and 2022?

2001 rules focused on returns. 2022 Rules introduced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) targets and a centralized online portal for trading recycling certificates, making compliance digital.

How do we handle a cracked or leaking battery?

Do not transport loose. Place in a heavy-duty, acid-resistant container (overpack) with a lid. Neutralize spills with lime/soda ash immediately.

Are forklift batteries different from car batteries?

Legally both are Lead-Acid. However, forklift (traction) batteries are larger, often steel-cased, and require heavy-lifting equipment and specialized dismantling lines.

What happens to the acid inside the battery?

Authorized recyclers neutralize acid in ETPs to produce gypsum or treat it for industrial reuse. Illegal recyclers dump it, causing severe environmental damage.
